# Completing a Contract

Complete is for Contracts whose milestones are all finished. If you instead need to end a Contract early — before its milestones are done — see [Terminating a Contract](/knowledge-base/administrator-help-guides/contracts/terminating-a-contract.md) or [Withdrawing a Contract](/knowledge-base/administrator-help-guides/contracts/withdrawing-a-contract.md) depending on whether it's already fully signed.

Once every milestone on a Contract has reached an accepted state (or been paid), an Admin can mark the Contract itself as **Complete** from the **Actions** section of the Contract page. This updates its status from **Active** to **Completed**.

* The **Complete** button stays disabled — with a tooltip explaining why — until all of that Contract's milestones are approved (or Finance Approved, if your organisation requires financial sign-off) or already paid.
* This is a manual step, not automatic. A Contract doesn't move to Completed just because its milestones are finished — an Admin needs to click Complete.

If a [Contract Variation](/knowledge-base/administrator-help-guides/contracts/contract-variations.md) has been created against this Contract, the original Contract and the Variation are separate records, each with their own Complete status. Marking a Variation as Complete does **not** automatically mark the original Contract as Complete, and vice versa. If you want both to show as Completed, mark each one individually once its own milestones are settled.
